Nature and Science – These two are the most renowned international scientific journals for nature and life sciences. Researchers who publish their results there earn a lot of prestige: The articles receive much attention from the global research community and are frequently cited by other research teams.

Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) in Bavaria, Germany, ranks among the top contributors to the journals of the Nature publishing company. In its 2017 issue, the index ranks the University of Würzburg among the 100 best research institutions worldwide and among the top four universities in Germany.

What does the Nature Index look at?

This has been revealed in the Nature Index which Springer Nature Group announced on 07 June 2018. The index specifies how often JMU authors published in the journals. The assessment also accounts for the contribution of each individual researcher to an article – the number of authors per article can vary considerably.

"This is an awesome result for the Würzburg scientists," says JMU President Alfred Forchel. "It demonstrates the research excellence of our scientists that receives a lot of attention on a global scale."

German universities in the world's top 100

Harvard University (USA) leads the global field. Ranking no. 47, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is top in Germany followed by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) which ranks 76th, the University of Heidelberg ranking 80th and the University of Würzburg 84th. The fact that three of four universities are based in Bavaria demonstrates the excellent global competitiveness of Bavarian academic institutions.

Excellent result also for the university hospital

A special Nature Index evaluates the performance in the field of healthcare. The Würzburg university hospital (UKW) ranks 80th worldwide and 11th among German university healthcare institutions.

Top position also in the U-Multirank

Recently, the high publication and citation figures of the University of Würzburg were also honoured in the fifth issue of the U-Multirank, the biggest university ranking worldwide. Together with the universities of Bonn and Heidelberg, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, the TUM and the LMU, the University of Würzburg is in the leading group of six German universities that scored four or more top marks in the five performance indicators for publications and citations.
