Embedded in this study, all participating 8th graders created individual concept maps. These maps contain concepts taught during a preceded teaching unit and are intended to measure, weather the 8th graders grasped the concepts and were further able to link them in a certain manner. This thesis focuses on how to work out a method to measure and compare the results of the created concept maps by developing a category-system. The development of this category-system was research-based and oriented on qualitative and quantitative content-analysis by Mayring (2015). Furthermore a powerful but easy to use marking-system was developed to fit the need to process the concept maps in order to find out all the used categories without missing any data. The developed category-system and the marking-system complemented by coding-rules were then merged into a coding-manual which enables a given person to rate the students concept maps.
The result of this thesis is a category-system composed of four main categories that make it possible to later distinguish between eight different concepts which were taught during the preceding teaching unit. Although the resulting coding manual can only be used to score concept maps resulting from the HOBOS-study, this thesis can be used by students of teaching biology as well as teachers of biology to understand how to analyze and score concept maps in general and how to develop a category-system/coding-manual on their own. Regarding further research, this thesis might make a little contribution to learn more about concept maps and their utility and help to implement them in future education.
